The Queensland Government is enhancing safety at rural level crossings by installing RAXS, which features quick installation, renewable energy and significant cost savings, while aiming for zero fatalities at these intersections.
Many thanks to Joshua Farrell for reporting on the details of the successful trials in both Oakey and Thallon, summarised below:
The Queensland Government is leading the way in enhancing safety at rural level crossings by replacing two dangerous passive crossings with the innovative Rail Active Crossing System (RAXS). Developed by Rail Safety Systems (RSS), installation of this system at Oakey and Thallon has significantly enhanced safety for local motorists, now ranked among the safest in rural Austalia.
This initiative is part of the national “Vision Zero – Zero harm at Australia’s level crossings” strategy, aiming for zero fatalities at level crossings.
Key features of the RAXS include:
- Modular Design: Quick installation with minimal disruption.
- Renewable Energy: Operated by sustainable energy sources.
- Cost Efficiency: Priced at one-third of traditional upgrades.
- Enhanced Safety: Equipped with warning lights and bells to lower accident risks.
This project reflects Queensland’s commitment to rail safety and innovation, with funding available through the Australian Government’s Regional Level Crossing Upgrade Fund until 27 September.
RAXS is also set to be trialed in New South Wales at the Callaghans Lane level crossing, in response to the local community’s concerns about safety.
